A 32-year-old British man has been charged with 11 counts of attempted murder following a mass stabbing on a London-bound train on Saturday, police confirmed. The charges also include one count of assault and two counts of possessing a bladed weapon.
The suspect, Anthony Williams, appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until his next hearing on December 1. Ten of the attempted murder charges relate to the train attack, while the eleventh stems from a separate stabbing at a London station earlier the same day.
Eleven people were injured in the train attack, including a crew member who remains in critical but stable condition. Authorities said the suspect acted alone, and terrorism has been ruled out.
Police are investigating potential links to previous knife incidents in Williams’ hometown of Peterborough, including a Friday night stabbing of a 14-year-old and two other incidents involving a knife at a local barber’s shop.
Among the victims is Jonathan Gjoshe, a player for Scunthorpe United, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Five of the injured have since been discharged from hospital.
Transport Minister Heidi Alexander confirmed that Williams was not known to security services and declined to comment on whether he had a history of mental health issues.
