A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to nine months in jail for slashing local actor Ryan Lian outside NEX shopping mall in Serangoon following a confrontation that began with a staring incident.
According to CNA, Aaron Samuel Yukon pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt, while a separate charge of possessing a karambit knife was taken into consideration.
The court heard that the incident occurred around 6.10pm on November 22 last year, when Lian — best known for his roles in Ah Boys to Men 4 and Money No Enough 3 — was smoking near the mall. Yukon, a stranger, joined him, and the two reportedly exchanged stares before a fight broke out.
During the scuffle, Yukon pulled out a karambit knife from his pouch and slashed Lian across the face before fleeing the scene.
Lian sustained facial fractures, cuts, and bruises, and was treated by off-duty paramedics before being taken to the hospital.
Prosecutors sought up to 11 months’ imprisonment, citing the public nature of the attack and the severity of the injuries.
Yukon’s lawyer argued that his client acted in self-defence after being provoked and noted that he suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which affected his impulse control.
After considering the arguments, the court sentenced Yukon to nine months in prison.
