The Sessions Court here has sentenced a 57-year-old man to nine years in prison for robbing a goldsmith shop of a gold chain worth RM20,652 earlier this month.
Wong Siew Too, from Jalan Merdeka, pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery under Section 390(2) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison term of 14 years, along with a possible fine or caning.
According to court records, Wong visited the Market Street goldsmith shop on Nov 5 at 1.50pm, pretending to browse jewelry. When a shop assistant presented a gold chain for inspection, Wong fled with the item. The shop manager pursued and apprehended him, and police were contacted immediately. CCTV footage confirmed Wong’s escape with the chain. Investigations revealed he had first visited the shop earlier that day at 9.45am and returned around 1.40pm before committing the theft.
In a separate case heard in the same courtroom, a 33-year-old man from Kanowit, Kamri Abdullah, was sentenced to five years in prison and one stroke of the rotan for drug abuse. Kamri, who has three prior convictions for the same offence, pleaded guilty under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. He tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine on Nov 26, 2024, after a urine sample was taken at the Kanowit police station.
The court also ordered Kamri to undergo two years of supervision following his prison term. Both cases were prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nuralisa Natasha Nazrulzam, and neither Wong nor Kamri had legal representation.
