The Sessions Court here sentenced two friends to nine years’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane each for committing an armed gang robbery at a house in Bau in August this year.
Akmal Najmuddin Jeperidin, 32, and Horyezad Hosen, 24, pleaded guilty to charges under Section 395 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code. The provision carries a maximum 20-year prison term and whipping when offenders use a deadly weapon during the crime. Judge Noorhisham Mohd Jaafar ordered the sentences to run from the date of their arrest.
The incident occurred on Aug 9 at around 2pm at a house along Jalan Taiton. Court documents revealed that the pair, with one wielding a machete, tied up the 69-year-old homeowner, his wife, son, and granddaughter using adhesive tape. They attempted to access the safe, and after one of them kicked the homeowner, the other found the safe key and stole approximately RM100,000 in cash.
In addition to the cash, the offenders took two gold necklaces, a gold ring, the homeowner’s wallet containing identity documents, several ATM cards, driving licences, motorcycle road tax, RM800 in cash, and two mobile phones.
Police reports led to the arrest of Akmal on Nov 7 and Horyezad on Nov 12. Investigations confirmed that both had entered the house to commit the robbery and later disposed of some stolen items.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid urged a strong sentence, citing the seriousness of the offence, use of a deadly weapon, substantial unrecovered losses, and the vulnerability of the elderly victims. Both accused were unrepresented in court, and the case was investigated by Insp Vimal Nathan.
