Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today vowed to act as Perodua’s top ambassador abroad, promoting the national carmaker as part of Malaysia’s drive to expand its automotive industry internationally.
Speaking at the launch of Perodua’s 5.5 millionth car, Anwar praised the company for producing vehicles designed and built largely by Malaysians, many of them Bumiputera, and for reflecting the Madani values of sustainability, affordability, and good governance.
“I’ve been waiting for a car that is sustainable, environmentally friendly, locally produced, and built with the latest technology,” he said. “This car represents all of that — and it’s affordable. That’s what Madani means.”
Anwar thanked Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz and Perodua president Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad, highlighting the company’s success as proof that discipline, innovation, and teamwork can make Malaysian products globally competitive.
He added that Malaysia was now gaining international attention not just for new projects, but for its reform efforts and determination. “If we can produce an electric Perodua for the local market, why not aim to penetrate overseas markets?” he said, pledging to promote Perodua on upcoming visits to South Africa and other countries.
“In meetings, I’ll tell ministers we want Malaysia given priority. That’s how real international partnerships are built,” he said to applause.
Anwar highlighted his government’s anti-corruption drive, which has saved RM15.57 billion in the past two years by curbing scams and leakages.
“We don’t do this for thanks from the Opposition. We do it because it’s our duty, not out of love for the company alone, but for the country,” he said.
He noted that Perodua’s growth aligns with national goals to create jobs, promote research and innovation, and deliver returns for the nation. Reflecting on his personal connection with the brand, he shared he still drives his own Myvi and joked about returning his government-issued Mercedes after leaving office.
Describing the launch as a major national agenda, Anwar said it symbolised Malaysia’s potential to advance in electric vehicle technology, digital transformation, AI, and continuous skills training.
Recalling his first visit to the Perodua factory in 1997 before his imprisonment, Anwar said, “It’s more pleasant being here at Perodua than answering questions in Parliament. Back then, I came before being sent away. Today I come back to lift you up.”
He urged the company to continue leading Malaysia toward a fully locally made EV at an affordable price.
Anwar toured the factory, met staff, and inspected the blue Perodua Bezza 1.3L, the company’s 5.5 millionth car.
Perodua president Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the Bezza 1.3L has been the company’s best-selling model since 2024 and is expected to surpass the popular Myvi in sales this year.
