Family Calls for Accountability After Teen Killed by Bus in Penang

Date:

A 17-year-old student, Jason Lee, tragically died yesterday morning (13 Nov) after being run over by a bus along Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway. He was riding home after purchasing food when the collision occurred.

Jason’s parents are calling for accountability and hope the bus driver comes forward.

Jason’s mother, Liu Qing Li (52), broke down while recalling her son’s death. She told Sin Chew Daily that the bus was speeding, particularly dangerous with her son’s motorcycle nearby.

“I don’t believe my son crashed into the bus. But no matter who is at fault, my child is already gone,” she said, adding that the driver should not have fled the scene.

Jason’s father, Lee Zhen Zheng (47), explained that his son usually rode in the expressway’s dedicated motorcycle lane, which was closed due to ongoing LRT construction.

“This forced motorcyclists onto the main road. Proper lanes are essential to reduce accidents,” he said, noting that Jason may be the first fatality since the lane closure.

He also claimed the bus was traveling at high speed, which caused the wheels to run over his son’s body, and urged the driver to visit the wake and pay respects.

“At this point, arguing about who is right or wrong is meaningless. My son cannot come back,” he said.

The family has not yet lodged a police report but plans to do so after funeral arrangements are completed. Liu said she wants her son to rest in peace and dismissed online claims that Jason collided with the bus.
