A Malaysian woman said she was left devastated after learning her parents had misled her into taking a personal loan, allegedly under the guise of helping the family settle outstanding debts.
Believing the situation was urgent, she applied for the loan without hesitation, trusting that she was supporting her family in a time of need.
But once the loan was approved, she discovered the truth: the money was not intended for debt repayment at all — it was to fund her younger brother’s wedding reception.
The woman told mStar that what hurt most was how her father had personally pleaded for help, convincing her that the family was in financial distress.
According to her, her father later promised to repay her in monthly instalments, though he said he would deduct the repayment amount from her salary first. He also assured her he would eventually use his EPF savings to settle the loan, but she admitted she was uncertain whether that promise would ever be fulfilled.
She said she is still struggling to come to terms with the deception, especially given that the money was used to ease her brother’s wedding expenses — something she herself, unmarried, said she would never take a loan for.
The incident has left her deeply disappointed and feeling taken advantage of by the people she trusted most. Now, she says, she is unsure how to move forward after the betrayal.
