The main bridge linking Kampung Tigot to the main road has collapsed after years of wear and tear, leaving hundreds of residents stranded and disrupting their daily routines.
The decades-old wooden bridge, which served as the only direct connection for villagers to reach Keningau for work, school, and to transport farm produce, gave way after a heavy lorry attempted to cross it.
“The bridge had been showing signs of damage for years, but no repairs were ever made despite repeated complaints,” said village representative Addy. “It finally collapsed under the weight of the truck.”
With the bridge gone, residents are forced to take a long detour via Jalan Baginda to Binaung — a route that takes over an hour compared to the previous 15-minute drive.
The alternative route through Kampung Kota Ayangan, previously used as a backup, was also destroyed by recent floods, leaving villagers with limited access to town.
Farmers have been among the hardest hit. “Without the bridge, it’s hard to send our vegetables, rubber, and paddy to the market. Many of us are suffering losses because our produce can’t reach Keningau in time,” Addy added.
Residents have submitted a new report urging the State Government and Public Works Department (JKR) to take immediate action.
“We hope the Government will prioritise this. The bridge is our lifeline — without it, everything becomes difficult,” Addy said.
The incident has renewed calls for long-term investment in rural infrastructure, with villagers pushing for a new concrete bridge to ensure lasting safety and accessibility.
