KLIA Aerotrain Gets Intensive Repair Plan After Months of Disruptions

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will roll out a month-long Comprehensive Action Plan (CAP) starting tomorrow to strengthen the reliability and safety of the KL International Airport (KLIA) Aerotrain system.

MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the plan—endorsed by the Transport Ministry and acknowledged by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD)—will maximise the remaining defects liability period (DLP) to address system weaknesses through a structured, multi-phase strategy.

Beginning Friday, daily inspections and repair works will take place from 9pm to 7am to minimise impact on passengers.

“This plan is a decisive step in restoring public confidence. Our priority is ensuring the Aerotrain delivers the safety and reliability expected of a major international gateway like KLIA,” he said during a media briefing.

During this period, MAHB will deploy full bus services between the main terminal and satellite buildings, while more flight operations will be shifted to the main terminal to reduce passenger transfers.

Developed with contractors and consultants, the CAP consists of three stages:

Stage 1

  • Identify system flaws
  • Fix root-cause issues
  • Perform software and technical upgrades
  • Conduct detailed inspections of the entire system

Stage 2

  • Validate improvements through simulated operational tests
  • Apply targeted enhancements including recalibration, software updates and stress testing

Stage 3

  • Implement monitored trial runs to confirm system stability before full service resumes

An independent auditor will conduct a full technical and operational assessment, and APAD will perform a safety inspection once the CAP concludes.

On whether the plan may extend beyond Dec 15, Mohd Izani said this will depend on findings from the first two stages and the duration needed for trial operations.

Since resuming operations on July 1, the Aerotrain has carried seven million passengers and completed over 53,000 trips, with a service availability rate of 98.41 per cent. — Bernama
