An elderly driver lost control of his multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and crashed into a petrol pump shortly after refuelling at a petrol station in Keningau on Sunday.
The incident, which occurred at around 1.20pm, involved a 73-year-old driver who reportedly experienced dizziness. He was later taken to Hospital Keningau for treatment.
Keningau District Police Chief, Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai, said initial investigations revealed that the accident happened as the driver was exiting the petrol station after completing his refuelling.
“However, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a petrol pump before crashing into the rear left side of a four-wheel drive vehicle that was also at the same pump,” he said when contacted on Sunday.
The collision resulted in damage to the petrol pump as well as both vehicles involved. Authorities noted that such incidents highlight the importance of ensuring driver fitness and alertness, especially among elderly motorists.
The MPV driver did not sustain any physical injuries but was sent to hospital after complaining of dizziness, while the driver of the four-wheel drive vehicle escaped unharmed.
The case is currently being investigated under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.
