A man believed to be acting as a drug courier has been arrested with 1.5 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, estimated to be worth RM69,080, during an Op Tapis operation on Friday.
Pontian district police chief Hadzrat Hussien Mion Hussain said the suspect was detained at about 9.15pm by the roadside along Jalan Kukup in Kampung Penerok.
The arrest was made after a patrol team came across a car carrying a man and a woman in suspicious circumstances.
“An inspection led to the discovery of drugs believed to be methamphetamine, with an estimated gross weight of 1,528 grammes,” he said in a statement, adding that the seizure was valued at RM69,080 based on current market prices.
Initial investigations revealed that the 36-year-old suspect, who is unemployed, has two prior records related to drug and criminal offences.
Police believe the man was acting as a courier, earning RM1,000 to deliver drug supplies using e-hailing services.
He allegedly received instructions via phone from a local man he met while detained at Simpang Renggam Prison in 2020.
“The suspect was instructed to collect the drugs from a blue Perodua Bezza parked near a restaurant in Perling before delivering them to a designated location,” he said.
Authorities said the suspect used an e-hailing service to travel to the pickup point.
Meanwhile, a 43-year-old woman, believed to be the e-hailing driver, was also detained to assist in investigations. She has since been released on police bail and may be recalled for further questioning.
The Magistrate’s Court has granted a seven-day remand order for the male suspect from April 11 to April 17 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
