Police have arrested eight men, including a foreign national, suspected of being involved in a fight at the Ramadan bazaar in Sabindo, Tawau, yesterday evening.
Tawau District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin, said the suspects, aged between 17 and 34, were detained at several locations around the district after police received a report about the incident at about 8.37pm.
During the operation, officers also seized a motorcycle chain believed to have been used as a weapon in the altercation.
Preliminary investigations found that the fight was triggered by dissatisfaction between two groups, although further investigations are still ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
“All the suspects will be remanded to assist in the investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting,” Jasmin said in a statement today.
Earlier, two videos lasting 17 and 20 seconds showing a group of men involved in a fight at the Sabindo bazaar site went viral on social media. The incident sparked concern among netizens, many of whom urged the public to refrain from such behaviour in a family-friendly area, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.
