A domestic violence tragedy in Shreveport, Louisiana, has left eight children dead after a gunman opened fire before being fatally shot by police during a vehicle pursuit on Sunday (April 19).
Authorities said seven of the victims were found inside a home where the initial shooting took place, while an eighth child died after attempting to escape by climbing onto a rooftop. Police described one of the scenes as “incredibly gruesome” due to the scale of the violence.
According to the Shreveport Police Department, the suspect first shot a woman before moving to a nearby residence where the children were killed. The victims, aged between one and 14 years old, are believed to be part of the same extended family. Two women were also hospitalised with serious injuries following the attack.
Police identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins. Officials said he later carjacked a vehicle and fled the scene, leading officers on a chase into neighbouring Bossier Parish, where he was ultimately shot and killed by law enforcement.
Investigators believe Elkins and one of the injured women were the parents of seven of the children. Authorities have confirmed that multiple families have been affected by the incident, which began shortly after 6am local time.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux described the incident as one of the most devastating tragedies the city has experienced, while confirming that support services and a dedicated domestic violence centre are being coordinated in response.
Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the motive behind the attack. While domestic violence is suspected as a key factor, authorities have not confirmed whether the suspect had a documented history of abuse.
Louisiana state officials, including Senator Sam Jenkins, have called for stronger intervention and support systems to address domestic violence cases earlier, in an effort to prevent similar tragedies.
The case has drawn national attention, with US House Speaker Mike Johnson calling it a heartbreaking tragedy, while Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed condolences and prayers for those affected.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, the incident adds to a growing number of mass shootings in the United States this year, with hundreds of victims already recorded in similar cases involving multiple casualties.
