Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the long-hunted leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has died following a major military operation in western Mexico on Sunday, marking a significant breakthrough for the Mexican government amid mounting pressure to demonstrate results to Washington.
Oseguera, a former police officer turned cartel chief, had overseen the rapid expansion of CJNG into one of the most dominant and feared criminal syndicates in the country. The US Drug Enforcement Administration had previously described the group as among the most powerful and ruthless criminal organisations operating in Mexico.
Operation In Tapalpa
The coordinated raid unfolded in Tapalpa, located in the western state of Jalisco, where multiple branches of Mexico’s armed forces were deployed. According to Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense, US authorities provided complementary intelligence that aided the mission.
A US defence official confirmed that an interagency American task force contributed to the effort, although the extent of Washington’s direct involvement remains unclear. Officials stressed that the operation itself was carried out by Mexican forces.
During the confrontation, CJNG gunmen exchanged fire with security personnel. Four suspected gang members were killed at the scene, while Oseguera and two others sustained serious injuries. The defence ministry said they later died while being transported by aircraft to Mexico City.
Three Mexican service members were wounded and transferred to a hospital in the capital for treatment.
Wave Of Violence Follows
In the aftermath of the operation, violence flared across parts of Jalisco and neighbouring states. Suspected organised crime figures reportedly torched buses and commercial premises while engaging in clashes with security forces.
Fires were also set in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, heightening tensions in a region popular with tourists. The US Department of State urged American nationals in affected areas to remain indoors and seek shelter until further notice.
Since January, the Joint Interagency Task Force-Counter Cartel has been working alongside Mexican forces through US Northern Command to curb cartel activity along the US-Mexico border, according to American officials.
Government Response
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum praised the agencies involved, describing the operation as a critical step in the country’s security strategy.
She said federal and state authorities were operating in full coordination to contain unrest, adding that normal activities were continuing in most parts of the country.
“We work every day for the peace, security, justice, and well-being of Mexico,” she said, as the government seeks to stabilise affected areas and prevent further retaliation.
