Elderly Couple Killed Instantly After Motorcycle Gets Crushed by Lorry

Date:

A husband and wife were killed after their motorcycle was hit by a lorry at the Jitra Hospital roundabout on Tuesday morning.

In the 9:40 a.m. incident, the victims, Megat Yahya Megat Ahmad, 66, who was riding a Yamaha Nouvo LC motorcycle with his wife, Khoriyah Kasim, 61, were pronounced dead at the scene from severe injuries across their bodies.

Kubang Pasu District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohd Radzi Abdul Rahim, said the accident involved a blue Hino lorry driven by a 51-year-old man and the couple’s motorcycle.

“Initial investigations found that the lorry was heading from Pekan Jitra towards Taman Suria before making a left turn. At the same time, the motorcycle ridden by the victims attempted to overtake on the left side and became trapped under the lorry,” he said in a statement.

The lorry driver was unharmed, while both victims, who lived in Kampung Kepala Batu, Pelubang, were confirmed dead at the scene before being taken to Jitra Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

“The lorry driver was detained to assist investigations and underwent a urine test, which came back negative. He has since been released,” Mohd Radzi added.

Investigations revealed the accident was caused by the victims’ negligence in attempting to overtake the lorry from the left side. The driver was said to have needed extra clearance to make the left turn due to the long load.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
