An elderly woman and her grandson were tragically killed in a fire at a worker’s housing unit on Jalan Sungai Nyigu, Bintulu, early this morning.
According to a spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre (PGO JBPM), the victims have been identified as 61-year-old Taun Nyaring and 15-year-old Melbourne Jeasy.
A team from the Bintulu Fire and Rescue Station was dispatched to the scene at 1:10 a.m. following an emergency call about the fire.
“Upon arrival, the fire team found flames engulfing a block of 31 temporary worker housing units,” the spokesperson said.
Firefighters used two water streams and two nozzles, drawing water from a nearby river and pumping it into fire engines, to tackle the blaze.
After more than three hours, the fire was brought under control. During a search, firefighters discovered the charred bodies of the two victims.
“The team recovered both bodies from the site and handed them over to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for further action,” the spokesperson added.
The victims’ bodies were subsequently sent to the Forensic Unit of Bintulu Hospital for post-mortem examination.
