A former bus driver and his girlfriend, who went viral for performing a dangerous “lap-driving” stunt, have been sentenced to jail and fined after pleading guilty at the Magistrate’s Court here.
Magistrate Mazana Sinin handed down a 12-month prison sentence and a RM5,000 fine to Arif Fahmi Abd. Salam, 36, while Nur Adila Najwa Ilham Ameerullah, 21, received six months’ jail and the same fine. Both sentences take effect from the date of conviction.
According to the charge, the duo acted together while Arif was driving a bus bearing registration number APE 9588 in a manner that was dangerous to the public. The incident took place at about 7.30pm on April 12, 2026, at the exit of the Bemban R&R, heading southbound.
They were charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 2020), read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, a fine ranging from RM5,000 to RM15,000, and disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for at least five years.
In the same proceedings, Nur Adila also faced an additional charge under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 for allegedly using abusive and insulting words towards a 44-year-old female passenger. The act, which disturbed the victim, reportedly occurred inside a Sri Maju Ekspres bus earlier that evening.
Earlier, Arif Fahmi appealed for leniency, stating that he had lost his job following the incident and still needed to cooperate with the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and the Road Transport Department in relation to the case. He added that it was their first offence and acknowledged the serious consequences of their actions.
Nur Adila, in her plea, said she hoped to further her studies and had moved from Kedah to Kuala Lumpur to earn money for that purpose. However, the prosecution, led by Mohd. Asri Abd. Rahman Sidik and Syazwani Mohamad Yusri, urged the court to impose a heavier sentence, citing the severity of the offence and the risk posed to 27 passengers on board.
The court ultimately ruled that the actions of the accused had caused public concern over the safety of bus travel and could not be tolerated. In addition to the custodial sentences and fines, both individuals had their driving licences suspended for five years.
Nur Adila was also fined RM100 for the minor offence charge, or 14 days’ imprisonment in default of payment.
