Ex-Lovers Sue Each Other Over Millions Tied to Long-Term Affair

Date:

Two former lovers in Singapore have been embroiled in legal battles over money exchanged during their nearly 30-year-long extramarital affair.

The High Court ruled in favor of 55-year-old Sin Wee Hiong, dismissing the claim by her former partner, Chan Tuck Cheong, who alleged she owed him S$222,000. Instead, the court found that Sin had lent Chan over S$1 million, with S$578,000 still outstanding.

According to the judgement, Chan borrowed S$800,000 from Sin in 2013 after she and her then-husband remortgaged their Serangoon Gardens home. Chan had argued that the signed loan document was a sham intended to mislead Sin’s husband, but the court found insufficient evidence to support his claim.

The judge also ruled that transfers from Chan to Sin between 2017 and 2021 were partial repayments, while additional transfers from Sin to Chan between 2018 and 2019 were new loans for his business and his daughter’s overseas studies.

Chan and Sin, both business partners in TC Sin & Associates, began their affair in 1993 while married to others. The relationship ended in 2022. The couple were known to be heavy gamblers, frequently visiting Resorts World Sentosa.

Sin later filed a minority oppression suit against Chan in May 2023, while ICPH International, a company Chan founded, sued her in July 2023 for over S$69,000 in outstanding loans. The court allowed the present suit to proceed while the other cases were temporarily on hold.
