Explicit Telegram Groups Taken Down After Complaint Over 18-Year-Old Girl

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has confirmed that the explicit content and related Telegram groups involving an 18-year-old girl have been removed, emphasizing that the commission takes the matter seriously.

According to a statement issued today, the MCMC acted after Communications Deputy Minister Chang Lian Qun lodged a complaint regarding the incident. The commission engaged directly with the Telegram platform, which subsequently removed the inappropriate content and groups.

The Telegram pornographic groups reportedly contained photos of female students from various schools and short videos manipulated to produce explicit material.

The MCMC clarified that it does not have the authority to directly terminate social media accounts or remove content from platforms. “The commission can only submit complaints to the relevant platforms, which then evaluate and take appropriate action according to their policies,” the statement said.

Regarding the complainant’s concern about being unable to meet with the responsible officer, the commission explained that the meeting initially scheduled for December 30 last year could not take place because the officer was on medical leave. Another officer has since been appointed to ensure that all necessary evidence is collected.

“The commission has contacted the complainant to obtain the required evidence and proceed with further action,” it said, acknowledging that the complaint should have been handled with clearer communication. The case was previously marked as “resolved” but was not fully addressed in a timely manner.

The MCMC also reminded all social media platforms that under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and the Cybersecurity Act 2025, they are legally obligated to curb and prevent the spread of harmful online content. “Social media platforms must not be used to upload, share, or disseminate illegal, obscene, or harmful content,” the statement added.

Earlier reports noted that a Chinese-Malaysian parent, upon learning that their 18-year-old daughter’s photos had been misused in a pornographic group, reported the matter to the police and sought MCMC assistance. However, the parent was unable to meet the responsible officer as planned and discovered that the case had been closed prematurely.
