A deadly fire broke out yesterday afternoon at a block of HDB flats in Jalan Bukit Merah, Singapore, claiming the lives of a man and a woman. The incident occurred around 4:00 PM at a fourth-floor unit in Block 106. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected.
According to Lianhe Zaobao, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported that firefighters arriving at the scene found the living room and bedroom of the unit engulfed in flames. A fire hose was deployed to extinguish the fire.
During the operation, firefighters discovered the two victims unconscious in the kitchen. Both were immediately rescued and rushed to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Two other residents from nearby units were also sent to hospital for treatment after experiencing smoke inhalation and feeling unwell.
For safety, the Singapore Police Force and SCDF evacuated 60 residents from the block. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
Police confirmed that the deceased are a 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman. Authorities have ruled out homicide as a cause of the blaze.
