A sales manager has admitted to murdering his churchgoing wife on the very day he was due to stand trial for the crime.
Paul Knight, 36, strangled his wife, 32-year-old Isobella “Izzy” Knight, at their home in Donnington Road, Burton Latimer, while their two young daughters slept. The following morning, he asked his mother to look after the children, claiming both he and his wife were unwell. After the children were taken into his mother’s care, Knight attempted suicide but failed, later crashing his car in a nearby McDonald’s car park.
Knight had previously admitted to the manslaughter of his wife but denied murder. However, on the morning his two-week trial was set to begin, he changed his plea to guilty. During a brief hearing at Northampton Crown Court, Knight kept his head bowed as the charge was read, with family members from both sides present. His barrister, John Lloyd-Jones KC, explained that Knight had decided to admit murder after discussions before Christmas, noting that he had never denied unlawfully killing his wife.
The court heard that Knight was an area sales manager for a pottery business, and his wife, Izzy, was a devoted mother and churchgoer. Police discovered her body during a welfare check after responding to Knight’s car crash. A post-mortem confirmed she died from strangulation.
Judge Adrienne Lucking reminded Knight that the only possible sentence for his crime was life imprisonment, though she must determine the minimum term before he becomes eligible for parole.
Friends, family, and community members described Izzy as a loving mother, treasured daughter, and talented individual. Her mother, Helena, said, “Izzy was so much more than a victim,” while her father added, “She encouraged her children to find their talents, and we will keep her memory alive for them.”
Detective Chief Inspector Torie Harrison of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit called the case a “tragic example of violence against a woman with everything to live for,” noting that Knight’s admission spared Izzy’s family further trauma from a trial.
Knight is scheduled to be sentenced on January 29. Community members and church friends have left floral tributes at the family home, honoring Izzy’s memory and offering support to her grieving family.
