A father in Madhya Pradesh, India, has been arrested for allegedly shooting dead his 17-year-old daughter after discovering she was in a relationship with a man from a different caste, The Times of India reported.
The victim, a Class 12 student, had been reported missing since September 23. A neighbor later told police they heard gunshots and screams from the family’s home on the night of her disappearance, after which the teenager was never seen again.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly wrapped his daughter’s body in a tarpaulin, tied it with stones, and dumped it in the Kwari River near their village, Bhagwan Singh Ka Pura.
Initially, the man gave conflicting statements to police, at one point claiming his daughter had shot herself and that he had burned her body by the riverbank. However, further investigation revealed the killing stemmed from an argument over her inter-caste relationship, which the suspect eventually admitted to.
The girl’s body was later recovered by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) during a search operation on Sunday. Police have since sent the remains for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities also confirmed that the shocking incident occurred in front of the victim’s younger sister.
