A 21-year-old woman was forced to be assisted down a mountain for about three kilometres after suffering shortness of breath during a hiking activity at Gunung Irau, on the Perak–Pahang border on Saturday night.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said the department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 8.32pm.
He said the victim experienced breathing difficulties while ascending the mountain.
Firefighters from the Simpang Pulai Fire and Rescue Station, with assistance from the Brinchang station, were deployed to the scene located at Agroto Business, Jalan Cameron Highlands–Simpang Pulai.
Fire engines arrived at about 9.15pm, where mountain guides who had exited earlier assisted rescuers in locating the victim.
Preliminary information indicated that the victim was about six kilometres from the Auxiliary Police hut, but vehicles could only access up to three kilometres, requiring rescuers to continue on foot.
The rescue team, led by operation commander Mohammad Nafis Nazmi Abdul Hadi, included three firefighters, two mountain guides, a Ministry of Health medical officer and a member of the public.
Upon reaching the victim, Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) personnel carried out initial treatment using the SAVER concept before she was wrapped in a thick blanket to stabilise her condition.
She was then carried down the mountain and handed over to Ministry of Health personnel for transfer to hospital by ambulance.
The victim was found safe at about 11.10pm.
The operation involving 16 firefighters ended completely at 12.40am.
