Authorities in Kota Kinabalu have apprehended five local men to assist in investigations regarding a violent encounter involving a vehicle near Jesselton Quay yesterday. The incident, which gained significant attention after footage was circulated across social media platforms, reportedly took place at approximately 1:45 pm. It occurred shortly after the victim had attended a function held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
Acting Kota Kinabalu District Police Chief, Superintendent Syed Lot Syed Ab Rahman, confirmed that a formal report was lodged regarding the altercation at 2:35 pm on the same day. Preliminary findings suggest that the victim, a 30-year-old teacher, was approached by several individuals as he headed toward his car. The group involved are believed to be employees of a nearby courier establishment.
The situation escalated following a verbal provocation between the parties involved, leading to a tense atmosphere. In an attempt to leave the scene, the victim reversed his vehicle and accidentally collided with another car. This mishap prompted several individuals to pursue the victim’s vehicle, subsequently shattering the driver’s side window and the rear windscreen.
Beyond the physical damage caused to the car, the victim alleged that he was subjected to criminal intimidation. According to his statement, members of the group issued threats while demanding that he exit the vehicle during the height of the confrontation. Following the report, police launched an immediate operation, resulting in the successful arrest of five suspects late last night.
Superintendent Syed Lot stated that the police are currently seeking a remand order for all suspects to facilitate a thorough investigation. The case is being scrutinised under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and Section 506 for criminal intimidation. Emphasising the gravity of the matter, the police have assured the public of a transparent investigation and urged citizens to refrain from spreading unverified information or engaging in speculation that could hinder legal proceedings.
