The heartbreaking life and untimely passing of five-year-old Zoey Felix have left a community in Topeka, Kansas, seeking answers after a series of systemic failures. Despite her fondness for unicorns, mermaids, and character T-shirts, Zoey’s daily reality was starkly different from that of her peers. Living in a dilapidated home devoid of electricity or running water, the young girl was frequently seen by neighbours in a dishevelled state, often wandering the streets and pleading with residents for a place to stay to escape her grim domestic situation.
Neighbours recounted numerous instances where they took Zoey in to provide the basic care she lacked at home. One resident, Shaniqua Bradley, noted that the child’s persistent requests to stay with others were a clear indication of distress, suggesting that such behaviour from a child typically signals underlying issues within the household. Another neighbour, Sharon Williams, stated that she had personally reported the ongoing neglect to authorities, highlighting that the child was often hungry and unwashed, yet she felt these warnings were not addressed with the necessary urgency.
Records indicate that local law enforcement had conducted at least three separate welfare checks at the property following reports of a lack of basic utilities and domestic disturbances. Furthermore, the Kansas Department for Children received multiple alerts regarding the family’s precarious living conditions. The situation grew more dire when the child’s mother, 36-year-old Holly Jo Felix, reportedly forced her husband and two daughters out of their residence, leading them to seek shelter in a local homeless encampment.
Tragedy struck after Zoey’s father, Ezekiel, who held legal custody, moved the children to the camp alongside a 25-year-old acquaintance, Mickel Cherry, whom the children referred to as “Uncle”. While Ezekiel was away at work, leaving Zoey in Cherry’s supervision, her older sister returned to the tent to find the five-year-old unconscious and partially clothed. Despite frantic efforts by her father and a bystander to revive her, Zoey was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, with medical examinations revealing she had suffered a violent sexual assault and severe internal injuries.
Mickel Cherry was subsequently apprehended and confessed to the horrific assault and the murder of the young girl, admitting to suffocating her with a pillow. To avoid a potential death sentence, Cherry pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 50 years in prison—comprising consecutive 25-year terms for murder and rape—with the possibility of parole only after serving the full duration.
