The grieving parents of a talented Form Two student who tragically died after being thrown into a 10-metre-deep manhole are seeking accountability from the construction contractor involved.
The victim, Lye Yun Kee, was riding a motorcycle with his 17-year-old brother, Yong Ming, when the accident occurred at 10:10pm on Jalan Bunga Tanjung. The siblings were reportedly on their way to a friend’s house in Kuala Ina after dinner in Tampin, according to China Press.
Lye was pronounced dead at 11:30pm at Tampin Hospital, while his brother sustained minor injuries.
At the wake, Lye’s father, Lye Hai Yuan, expressed the family’s anguish over the loss and alleged that the contractor had neglected to install essential safety measures.
Lye was an outstanding student at SMJK Pulau Sebang, serving as a prefect and a member of the school’s Chinese orchestra.
Repah state assemblyman Veerappan Subramaniam visited the wake on Tuesday to offer condolences and pledged to assist the family in exploring legal action. The school principal and deputy principal were also present to pay their respects.
