A heartbreaking act of love led an elderly man to make the painful decision to report his own grandson to the authorities, hoping it would help steer him away from years of drug addiction.
In a Facebook post, the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Kuala Muda District shared the story of an elderly couple who had reached the end of their emotional strength after repeatedly failing to help their grandson overcome his substance abuse.
The man, in his early 30s, had been addicted to drugs for several years. Despite countless pleas from his grandparents—who had raised him since childhood—he continued to abuse drugs, pushing himself further into danger.
Left with no alternative, the grandfather contacted the police and requested that his grandson be arrested. He even urged authorities to charge him under Section 39C of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1953, which carries stiffer penalties for repeat offenders.
According to the AADK post, the elderly couple broke down in tears while recounting the ordeal. The grandfather explained that his decision was not born out of rejection, but out of hope—believing that longer detention might finally give his grandson a chance to change his life for the better.
AADK urged the public not to judge the family, stressing that addiction is a complex issue. It also encouraged families facing similar struggles to seek professional help early, rather than suffer in silence.
