A new sinkhole—marking the fourth since November last year—has been reported at Kilometer 78 of the Gua Musang–Lojing Road, near Kampung Jekjok, Pos Brook, heading toward Gua Musang.
The stretch of road is now reduced to one lane after the sinkhole, which has been growing since August 7, worsened.
The road, which previously experienced a sinkhole in November last year causing lane closures, had been repaired by the concessionaire, but heavy rainfall since the beginning of this month is believed to have triggered another collapse.
Kelantan Public Works Department (JKR) Director, Ir Nik Soh Yaacoub, said the sinkhole was first detected on August 7, but persistent rain caused the situation to deteriorate.
“The road has been reduced to one lane from Lojing to Gua Musang following the sinkhole on August 7 until further instructions from JKR,” he explained.
According to reports from JKR Gua Musang, the new sinkhole measures 15 meters in length and 3.1 meters in depth.
“Previous sinkholes were repaired by the concessionaire, but the new one was detected on August 7. The road has four lanes; only one lane is closed from Lojing to Gua Musang. The stretch from Gua Musang to Lojing remains open,” he added.
The first sinkhole at KM78 was reported on November 23 last year, reaching six meters deep and causing a lane closure from Lojing. A second sinkhole, nine meters deep, appeared on December 12 at the same location, just five meters from the first.
A third sinkhole occurred on March 15 this year at the same site. The road was reopened to light vehicles on March 27 for Aidilfitri celebrations.
