A gym assistant was sentenced to two months’ jail for stealing two luxury watches worth about S$173,000 (≈ RM610,000) on two separate occasions.
Howard Lam Wen Jun, 27, had used a master key to the gym’s lockers to steal a Rolex Submariner Hulk and a Patek Philippe watch belonging to two different customers. The thefts took place over a period of more than a month.
In the first theft on Jan. 10, 2023, Lam stole the Rolex, valued at S$13,300 (≈ RM47,000), from a gym locker. The second theft occurred on Feb. 17, when he stole the Patek Philippe, valued at S$160,000 (≈ RM563,000), from another locker.
Lam was a student at the time and worked part-time as a gym assistant at Gym Virgin Active on the sixth floor of Guoco Tower along Wallich Street. He used his access as an employee to open the lockers with the master key, though it was not specified how he knew which lockers contained the high-value watches.
Police arrested Lam at his home on Feb. 28, 2023, and both watches were recovered.
The judge noted that Lam had betrayed the trust of customers twice but considered that it was his first offence and that he admitted guilt. Consequently, he was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, with his sentence postponed until Feb. 23.
