Heartless Dad Leaves 2-Year-Old to Die in Burning Car, Faces Decades in Prison

Date:

An Ohio father has been sentenced to decades in prison after leaving his two-year-old daughter, Lillyanna Stemen, to die in a burning car while he escaped the flames. Nicholas Stemen, 34, pleaded guilty to aggravated arson, involuntary manslaughter, and child endangerment.

Authorities said the vehicle was reported driving erratically on a local road before it stopped and caught fire. When police arrived, Stemen falsely claimed that no one was inside. Investigators noted he appeared intoxicated, with slurred speech and the smell of alcohol.

Emergency responders found Lillyanna trapped in her forward-facing car seat after extinguishing the fire. Stemen later admitted to consuming at least ten alcoholic drinks before the incident and claimed he “blacked out,” unable to recall the details of the tragedy.

In court, his defense attorney described the incident as a “tragedy” rather than intentional harm, but prosecutors and Lillyanna’s mother condemned his actions. A letter from the grieving mother read, “My baby girl is gone. He should spend his life behind bars.”

Stemen was convicted in October and sentenced on November 17 to 22 to 31 years in prison. He apologized in court, admitting his “sorry” could never undo the loss of his daughter.
