The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has issued an early flood forecast for Kelantan following a Continuous Rain Warning (Alert) released today by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).
In a statement, DID’s National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (PRABN) said flooding is expected to occur between January 5 and 8 in ten districts across the state, involving several major river basins.
The districts at risk are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Bachok, Machang, Kota Bharu, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang. The river basins affected include Sungai Kelantan, Sungai Golok, Sungai Semerak, Sungai Kemasin, Sungai Lebir, Sungai Galas and Sungai Nenggiri.
DID said continuous monitoring will be conducted, and flood warnings will be updated if significant rainfall continues in the affected areas. However, the agency cautioned that flooding may occur earlier or later than the forecasted dates, depending on weather conditions.
All disaster management agencies and residents, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, are advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by the authorities.
