A 75-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after suffering head injuries from a 500-metre fall while hiking Gunung Api in Mulu National Park.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) received an emergency call at 12:45 pm on Thursday and deployed the Mountain Cave Search and Rescue team from Marudi to the site. The victim, identified as Elisa Paul (also known as Lisa Paul) from the Kelabit ethnic group, was hiking with a tourist group near Camp 5 when the accident occurred.
Rescuers found him conscious and administered first aid to stop bleeding from his head. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted by helicopter from Layang-Layang Aerospace Miri Sdn Bhd to Miri Hospital for further treatment.
Gunung Api, standing over 1,750 meters tall, is one of the three major mountain ranges within Mulu National Park, famous for its distinctive limestone formations called the Mulu Pinnacles, and is considered one of Sarawak’s toughest climbs.
