A holiday trip ended in tragedy when one of two close friends was killed in a crash along Kilometer 224.8 of the North-South Expressway southbound earlier this morning.
In the 6.58am incident, the 23-year-old woman was travelling back to Pontian, Johor, in a separate motorcycle convoy alongside her female friend after a short getaway.
The pair are believed to have spent several days since Wednesday visiting Cameron Highlands and Genting Highlands in Pahang before beginning their journey home.
The friend riding behind later arrived at the scene minutes after the crash and found the victim lying on the road.
Acting Rembau district police chief Deputy Superintendent Azmi Ali said the victim, who was a member of the Malaysia Volunteer Corps Department (RELA), was riding a Yamaha 135LC from Genting Highlands towards Pontian when the accident occurred.
He said initial investigations showed that the motorcycle is believed to have lost control before crashing into the left-side metal road barrier and sliding into the emergency lane.
As a result of the impact, the victim suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Her remains have been sent to the Rembau Hospital Forensic Unit for post-mortem examination.
