Homestay Owner Shocked by Blood Stain Left by Guests, Bears Cost of Damaged Mattress

Date:

A homestay operator expressed her shock online after discovering a large blood stain on the bed of her rental unit following the checkout of a group of guests, sparking widespread discussion among netizens.

According to the woman’s Facebook post, the guests had requested to extend their stay by an additional day. However, she was unable to accommodate them as the unit had already been booked by another group and they were informed to check out by 12pm.

When her cleaner arrived around 1pm, the room was reportedly in disarray. The bed and bedsheets were soaked with what appeared to be a large pool of blood, absorbed into the mattress.

While the stain looked like blood, the owner noted there was no strong blood smell, making it difficult to immediately determine the cause. Attempts to contact the guests for clarification were unsuccessful, as they did not respond to calls or messages.

Responding to questions about compensation, the homestay operator said she believed the guests had “disappeared” and that the platform involved only allowed claims of up to RM150—far from enough to cover her losses.

As a result, the bedsheets, mattress, and pillows were deemed unusable and had to be discarded. The room was cleaned and disinfected, and a replacement mattress was arranged to ensure the next guests could check in as scheduled. The owner ultimately bore the cost herself.

She explained that incidents like this are why homestay operators often require deposits from guests and urged travellers not to blame hosts for such policies. “We try our best to maintain the cleanliness and condition of the homestay so every guest can stay comfortably,” she wrote, adding that she hopes guests will treat the property with the same care as their own homes.
