“I Thought It Was an Earthquake”: Car Drags Fuel Pump at George Town Petrol Station

Date:

What was meant to be a routine stop for fuel turned into a frightening moment at a petrol station in George Town after a Perodua Axia drove off with a petrol nozzle still attached, causing the pump to be dragged from its position.

The incident, which occurred on December 24 at a Caltex station along Jalan Argyll, was shared online by a man who was standing near the pump at the time.

He said he had just arrived at the station and was preparing to refuel when he suddenly heard a loud bang.

“At first, I thought it was an earthquake,” he wrote, describing how the sudden noise caught him completely off guard.

Moments later, he realised that the petrol pump was being pulled towards him after the car drove off without removing the nozzle. Fortunately, the pump did not fully collapse and no one was injured.

A video of the incident circulating online shows the pump partially dislodged, with the driver stopping nearby before returning to speak with petrol station staff.

Describing himself as “unlucky but lucky,” the man said he was shaken by the incident but relieved to have escaped unharmed. He also jokingly reminded motorists to double-check their vehicles before driving off to avoid similar mishaps.

In a follow-up update, he said the driver involved was discussing compensation with the station staff. He added that he had been refuelling at the adjacent pump when the incident happened and that it was his first time witnessing such an accident.
