Police in Osaka have arrested a 32-year-old unemployed woman on suspicion of abandoning the body of her stillborn baby, which was allegedly kept inside a home freezer for more than three years.
According to local reports, police believe the woman wrapped the infant’s body in a T-shirt before placing it inside a resealable plastic bag and storing it in the freezer around late August 2022.
The body was reportedly discovered on April 9 this year during a police search of her residence.
Investigators said the plastic bag allegedly contained the handwritten words, “I’m sorry, I love you.”
An autopsy later revealed that the infant was female and weighed approximately 315 grams at birth. Authorities believe the baby was stillborn.
During questioning prior to her arrest, the woman reportedly told investigators she did not call an ambulance because she “wanted to be with my baby forever.”
The woman had initially been arrested on April 7 over alleged violations of Japan’s Stimulant Control Act.
Police discovered the infant’s body inside the freezer compartment of her refrigerator while conducting a search at her home as part of the narcotics investigation.
Authorities are continuing investigations into the case.
