If You Were Pretty, I’d Let You Rest Every Day’ — Sexist Job Interview in China Sparks Outrage

Date:

A woman in Guangdong, China, has recently spoken out on social media about facing gender discrimination during a job application, sparking widespread debate online. On August 16, she shared screenshots of her conversation while applying for a position at a clothing store in Nanhai District, Foshan.

During the exchange, she told the recruiter that she could not accept a “single day off per week” system, explaining that her current job provides two rest days and she saw no reason to “torture herself” by downgrading. Instead of addressing her concerns, the recruiter reportedly replied, “If you were pretty, I’d let you have every day off.” The conversation escalated with further insults such as, “No wonder you can’t find a job,” and “You only deserve to kneel in the office.”

The woman revealed that she had applied through a job-seeking app and has since reported the recruiter’s conduct to the platform. However, she expressed dissatisfaction with the punishment, calling it too lenient, and urged the company to impose stricter penalties.

She later updated that the app had frozen the employer’s account, but explained that the platform said a permanent ban was not possible. As for not filing a police report, she admitted that since two days had already passed and she feared potential confrontation or safety risks, she chose not to pursue legal action. Instead, she hopes that by sharing her story, she can warn other job seekers to remain cautious of similar traps.
