Date:

Independent preacher Zamri Vinoth, charged with making statements that allegedly caused public alarm, was released today after posting bail of RM4,500.

The Magistrate’s Court granted bail with the assistance of fellow preacher Firdaus Wong. Speaking to reporters, Zamri urged all parties to seek reconciliation for the country’s benefit, emphasising that disputes should be resolved peacefully to preserve social harmony.

“If we can move towards reconciliation in any matter, it is far better for Malaysia’s wellbeing,” he said. Zamri also took the opportunity to wish all Malaysians a joyous Hari Raya Aidilfitri. “My final message: Selamat Hari Raya, maaf zahir dan batin. God willing, we will meet again. Thank you,” he added.

Zamri, whose full name is Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, 42, pleaded not guilty to the charge of posting statements on his Facebook account last month that could cause public alarm. He is the coordinator of the anti-unlawful house gathering movement, GARAH, and requested to be tried.

The charge was made under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to two years in prison, a fine, or both if convicted. The court allowed bail of RM4,500 with one surety and set the next case mention for April 29.
