The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) rescued 34 people, including infants and children, who were trapped following a flash flood at Umiku Sayang Kindergarten and Childcare Centre in Kampung Mohd Amin yesterday afternoon.

Operations Commander Senior Fire Officer II KUP Zakaria Mohamed said JBPM received an emergency call at 4.26pm. A Fire Rescue Tender with nine personnel from the Larkin Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, the Operations Response Team (PKO) confirmed that 34 victims were trapped inside the premises. They comprised 18 infants, 10 children, five teachers and a cook.

Rescue operations were carried out using boats, with assistance from four personnel from the Royal Malaysian Police. All victims were safely evacuated from the flooded childcare centre.

In a separate incident, Senior Fire Officer I Wan Nor Afandi Wan Yusoff from the Kempas Fire and Rescue Station said his team also rescued a five-month-old baby girl who was trapped by floodwaters at her caregiver’s house in Kampung Pasir.
