Beloved Tapir ‘Mascot’ of Mardi Cherating Park Killed in Early Morning Road Accident

Date:

A male tapir, often regarded as a “mascot” for campers due to its frequent appearances at Mardi Cherating Agrotechnology Park, was tragically killed in a road accident on Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman early Sunday morning.

Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the collision occurred at approximately 12:10 a.m. on July 13 when the tapir attempted to cross the poorly lit road and was struck by a vehicle. The driver, a 41-year-old man, was unharmed.

Police quickly responded to the scene to ensure traffic safety and manage the hazardous situation caused by the animal’s carcass lying in the middle of the road. The tapir’s body was subsequently handed over to the Pahang Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action.

Local resident Badrol Hisham Mohamad, 44, was among the first to arrive at the scene. He immediately contacted the authorities and noted that several motorists stopped to help direct traffic and prevent further accidents.

The Mardi Cherating Agrotechnology Park expressed deep sadness over the loss of the tapir in a Facebook post, describing it as a significant blow to wildlife enthusiasts. The tapir, a protected species and a familiar sight among campers and nature lovers, had been a cherished attraction at the park.
