KLIA Immigration Officer Charged with Bribery for Helping Foreigners Enter

Date:

A 47-year-old Immigration Department officer has been charged with seven counts of accepting bribes to help foreigners bypass immigration checks at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

Mohd Rahmat Mat Yusoff pleaded not guilty to all charges before Judge Rosli Ahmad at the Sessions Court. He is accused of receiving a total of RM5,100 through online transfers from a man’s bank account between June 28 and August 16, 2024, as inducement to facilitate entry at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2.

The officer also faces charges for failing to report the bribery to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) or police. The offences are framed under Section 25(1) of the MACC Act, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine up to RM100,000, or both, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Elyza Amira Haeeb Habib Rahman proposed bail of RM10,000 with one surety, along with conditions for the accused to surrender his passport, avoid tampering with witnesses, and report to the nearest MACC office every two months.

Defence counsel Nik Mohamaed Ikhwan Nik Mahamud requested a reduced bail of RM5,000, citing that his client supports a housewife and three children aged 13 to 18, and has served nearly 25 years in the Immigration Department.

The court granted RM10,000 bail with one surety and accepted the prosecution’s conditions. The case is scheduled for mention on February 27 for the submission of documents.
