A lorry driver was arrested at a petrol station in Lagenda Heights, Kedah, yesterday after he was suspected of purchasing diesel from four different petrol stations for smuggling activities.
The Kedah Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) said in a statement that the case was uncovered following two weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering.
During the 11am raid, enforcement officers discovered an intermediate bulk container (IBC) tank with a capacity of 1,000 litres filled with a liquid believed to be diesel.
Preliminary investigations found that the 61-year-old suspect had allegedly obtained the diesel from four petrol stations within the district before storing it in the container.
All items seized during the operation, including the suspected diesel stockpile, were estimated to be worth RM38,005.
The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Supply Control Act 1961 (Act 122) for possession of controlled goods without a storage permit.
If convicted, the suspect faces a fine of up to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.
