Two people, including a senior lawyer, have died in a fire that broke out at a law firm on King Street in Penang.
The Fire and Rescue Department said the blaze destroyed about 70% of the double-storey office unit, with initial reports indicating that two individuals were believed to have been trapped inside.
Later, Harinder Malkit Singh, deputy chairman of Penang’s planning appeals board, confirmed that one of the victims was G San Markan, 80, a senior member of the Malaysian Bar and also a member of the board.
The second victim is believed to be an office assistant in her 50s.
Authorities have yet to release further details as investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and the Fire and Rescue Department has been contacted for additional information.
