A Chinese Malaysian woman has once again become the target of loan shark harassment, seven months after her ex-boyfriend’s debts first brought trouble to her family.
According to her 36-year-old younger brother, identified only as Mr Lau, the woman’s home was splashed with red paint early on Jan 28, despite repeated police reports and attempts to explain that the actual debtor was no longer living there.
Mr Lau told China Press that his sister’s former boyfriend had borrowed money from multiple loan sharks before fleeing, leaving her and her family to deal with the consequences. Although the family had lodged police reports on four separate occasions and contacted the loan sharks to demand that they pursue the real debtor, the harassment has continued.
CCTV footage provided by the family shows two Chinese men arriving in a red car at the house at around 6:56am. The pair allegedly threw several pieces of paper into the home before splashing red paint on the front gate, then quickly fleeing the scene.
Mr Lau said the repeated acts of vandalism and intimidation have caused severe distress to the family, urging the loan sharks to stop targeting innocent parties and instead seek repayment from the actual borrower.
He revealed that the ex-boyfriend had used the woman’s home address in Bandar Mahkota Cheras in June last year to take loans from as many as 15 loan shark groups before disappearing.
Less than a month after the first incident, loan sharks allegedly returned to splash red paint again and issued threats to burn down the house. They also reportedly threatened to kidnap the woman’s child if the debt was not repaid.
Despite the passage of time, the harassment has resumed, leaving the family living in fear and calling for stronger action to protect innocent victims of loan shark intimidation.
