A local man and woman have been arrested by the police after a video depicting them engaging in indecent behaviour at a public cemetery went viral on social media. North East District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad confirmed that the authorities received a formal report regarding the footage at approximately 12.05 pm yesterday. The complainant, a 69-year-old local man, alerted the police to the video which showed the pair behaving inappropriately at a Chinese burial ground.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident took place on 22 March 2026 at the Batu Gantung Chinese Cemetery located in Air Itam. Following the circulation of the clip, police successfully identified both individuals involved as Malaysian citizens. The swift identification led to a series of arrests conducted late last night across different locations in the state to bring the suspects into custody for further questioning.
The female suspect, aged 37, was apprehended by police at approximately 8.35 pm at a flat situated near Jalan Padang Tembak. Shortly thereafter, at 11.10 pm, officers detained the 58-year-old male suspect in front of a building near Jalan Paya Terubong in Sungai Ara, Bayan Lepas. Upon their arrest, both individuals reportedly admitted to their involvement in the act depicted in the viral video, which has drawn widespread criticism from the public.
Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak stated that the case is currently being investigated under several legal provisions, including Section 294(a) and Section 509 of the Penal Code for public obscenity and acts intended to insult the modesty of a person. Additionally, the suspects are being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities to transmit offensive content.
The pair is scheduled to be remanded later today to facilitate further detailed investigations into the motives and circumstances of their actions. The police have advised the public to refrain from engaging in activities that disrespect religious or cultural sites and warned against the sharing of explicit or indecent content online. Authorities remain committed to upholding public order and ensuring that those who violate community standards are held accountable under Malaysian law.
