Malaysia Ordered to Pay RM1.1 Million Over Dutch Model Ivana Smit’s Death

Date:

A Malaysian High Court has ordered the government and three other parties to pay RM1.1 million in damages to the mother of Ivana Smit, a Dutch model who tragically fell to her death eight years ago.

Ivana, who was just 18 at the time, was found dead on December 7, 2017, after falling from the 20th floor of a condominium in Kuala Lumpur. Her body was discovered naked on the 6th-floor balcony of the building.

Her mother, Kristine Smit, filed a lawsuit against the Inspector-General of Police, Assistant Superintendent Faizal Abdullah (the investigating officer from Dang Wangi), the Minister of Home Affairs, and the Malaysian Government, citing negligence and failure to carry out their statutory duties in probing her daughter’s death.

High Court Judge Roz Mawar ruled in favor of the plaintiff and awarded RM500,000 in general damages, RM300,000 in aggravated damages, and RM300,000 in exemplary damages, totaling RM1.1 million in compensation.
