Recently, Malaysian influencer Sam Lim has stirred controversy by claiming that, the career path of a Graphic Designer has no future.
In a video he uploaded, Sam boldly titled it, “Being a Graphic Designer Has No Future,” even saying he doesn’t hire graphic designers because “ChatGPT is my graphic designer!”
He explained that hiring a designer costs thousands of ringgit a month, whereas ChatGPT only costs RM99. On top of that, he mentioned that with tools like Canva available today, a traditional designer is no longer necessary.
Sam also argued that graphic design isn’t much different from art. Many designers end up creating clothing and selling their own brands, working in agencies to produce pretty visuals that “aren’t worth much anymore,” or doing menus for restaurants and other miscellaneous projects.
He noted that while graphic design might have potential abroad, in Malaysia it’s a tough career unless one is exceptionally skilled or highly creative and able to provide unique value. He even suggested that students thinking of studying graphic design might be better off not wasting their parents’ money.

Reactions online were mixed. Some argued that tools are just tools—without a designer’s mindset, no software can produce good design. Others said Sam doesn’t fully understand the industry.
Yet, some agreed with his view, pointing out the need for designers to offer end-to-end services and how even some former graphic design teachers have switched careers.
Ultimately, the takeaway is that passion matters most. Choose a course you genuinely love; don’t give up on your dreams just because of someone else’s opinion.
