The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will be sending officers to Thailand to obtain more details regarding the arrest of a Malaysian national caught with firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in Sadao, Thailand, last Saturday.
The move aims to allow Malaysian authorities to gather information on the primary purpose of the 46-year-old suspect, who was stopped at a routine roadblock.
Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, said PDRM will cooperate closely with the Royal Thai Police to investigate the suspect’s modus operandi. The suspect is currently in Thai custody.
“So far, based on the information received, the suspect acted alone, and according to Thai authorities, he intended to bring the firearms and ammunition into Malaysia,” Mohd Khalid said.
He added that the investigation is ongoing to determine the suspect’s true intentions, operational methods, and whether he is linked to any criminal organization.
Mohd Khalid made these remarks at the launch of the Police Diploma Program (MQA) and National Occupational Skills Standard (JPK) at the PDRM Academy in Kuala Kubu Bharu.
Addressing border security following the incident, he reassured the public that the situation remains under control. “Our border points are always maintained in a controlled state, and security measures are constantly enhanced depending on any situation,” he said.
The incident occurred last Saturday when the suspect, driving a Malaysian-registered Kia, was stopped by police from the Sadao District Police Station during a roadblock. The checkpoint was part of a preventive operation targeting drug smuggling and other security threats.
During the inspection, Thai authorities discovered two M4 rifles, 300 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, seven 5.56mm magazines, 100 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition, and 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition. All firearms and ammunition were seized for further investigation.
