A soldier was charged at the Sessions Court here today for allegedly injuring his 10-year-old son in an incident at Kampung Kijang, near here, on May 11 last year.
Zainudin Zainal Abidin, 42, pleaded not guilty and requested for trial after the charge was read before Judge Zulkifli Abllah.
According to the charge, he is accused of abusing the 10-year-and-one-month-old boy by kicking his stomach and slapping his face, which may have caused physical injury and emotional distress to the child.
The offence was allegedly committed at a house in Kampung Kijang at about 7.30pm on May 11, 2024.
He is charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 (Act 611), which provides for a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Kamilah Che Ibrahim, while the accused was represented by lawyer Samsul Bahrin.
Initially, the prosecution did not offer bail, but the defence objected and requested a lower bail amount.
The court subsequently set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and fixed June 24 for mention of the case.
