Man Charged With Murder Over Cemetery Attack That Killed 68-Year-Old Worker

Date:

A mechanic was charged in the Magistrate’s Court today with the murder of a Chinese cemetery worker, while also facing a separate charge of attempting to kill the victim’s son.

The accused, Chang Nyet Nyee, 50, nodded when the murder charge was read out before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali. No plea was recorded, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Chang, who was unrepresented, is accused of killing 68-year-old Lo Thin Kuek at the Clan Chai Cemetery along Jalan Lumba Kuda in Kota Sentosa at about 11.30am on January 3. He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or a prison term of between 30 and 40 years, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chuah Khai Sheng did not offer bail, and the court fixed February 19 for mention.

In a separate proceeding at the Sessions Court, Chang pleaded not guilty to attempting to murder Lo Thin Kuek’s son, 34-year-old Lo Shau Loong, at the same location and time. He was charged under Section 307 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff opposed bail due to the seriousness of the offence and the fact that Chang is also facing a murder charge. Judge Iris Awen Jon agreed and denied bail, setting February 12 for the submission of documents.
